Across Penghu, from Huxi and Xixi on the main island to Niaoyu and Jibei, which can only be reached by boat, and further south to Qimei, circus travels between islands and schools, reaching children in the places where they live and learn every day. Some of these schools are small, where nearly every child knows one another. Others are surrounded by the sea, with journeys shaped by ferry schedules and weather conditions. These ways of life are very different from those on Taiwan’s main island, giving each circus encounter a meaning of its own. When performers juggle, tumble and balance in a familiar schoolyard, the seemingly distant world of the performing arts suddenly becomes something real, happening right in front of the children. When the children pick up circus props themselves, learning to control their bodies, find their balance and take on challenges together with their classmates, art is no longer something they simply watch. It becomes something they can experience and take part in themselves.
