Rural Schools in Hualien and Penghu

From the valleys of Hualien to the Penghu Islands, FOCASA brings circus into schools across eastern Taiwan and the offshore islands, reaching children in the places where they learn and spend their everyday lives. The journey crosses very different landscapes, from elementary schools in the townships of Guangfu and Fenglin in Hualien, to schools in Magong and communities across Baisha, Xiyu and Fenggui in Penghu. For some children, encountering a professional performing arts production is not part of everyday life. This time, instead of waiting for them to come to the theatre, circus sets out to meet them, travelling across mountains and sea. From discovering what circus is and watching demonstrations to picking up the props and trying the skills themselves, children explore their bodies through throwing, catching, balancing and working together. Some succeed on their first try. Others drop the prop, pick it up and try again. Perhaps this is where the real joy of circus lies: discovering, “I can always try one more time.” With the support of the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE), circus becomes an artistic journey in constant motion. The support of our corporate partner allows us to move beyond conventional stages and travel across mountains, seas and islands, bringing circus to more children wherever they are.
