Created in collaboration with Filipino artist Leeroy New, the work takes Shezi Island, on the outskirts of Taipei, as both its setting and point of departure. Encircled by the Keelung and Tamsui Rivers, the island has gradually transformed from an agricultural settlement into an area of factories and warehouses, while remaining caught for decades between urban development and constant uncertainty. Tracing half a century of change on Shezi Island, the work explores the complex social landscape shaped by the intertwining forces of land, community and urban transformation. Set within the Xishazui settlement, the performance leads audiences through narrow alleyways, along the riverbank and into industrial spaces. Leaving the conventional theatre behind, circus bodies enter the spaces of everyday life. Through climbing, movement, balance and instability, the performers interact with art installations and the surrounding environment, responding to Shezi Island’s unique condition: a place at the margins of the city, continually changing yet seemingly suspended in time. Through a dialogue between bodies, objects and the environment, the work looks at the neighbourhoods, communities and human connections gradually disappearing in the process of urban development. It also questions the shifting boundaries between civilisation and nature, development and preservation. As a city continues to move forward, what is left behind and what is quietly vanishing from our lives?
