Created in collaboration with Riverbed Theatre director Craig Quintero, the work takes dreams as its point of departure, bringing together Riverbed Theatre’s signature surreal imagery and the extraordinary physical abilities of circus performers. Somewhere between reality and dreams, a world emerges where neither logic nor gravity seems to apply. Drawing on Freud and Jung’s explorations of dreams and the unconscious, as well as the work of Surrealist artists such as Salvador Dalí and René Magritte, the production uses the circus body as a medium for constructing dreamscapes. Aerial suspension, bodies thrown off balance and stage images that appear to defy the laws of physics intersect with fragments of people, objects and memories from everyday life. Familiar realities are dismantled and reassembled, constantly shifting between the recognisable and the strange, much like a dream itself. The work becomes a bridge suspended between waking life and the world of dreams. Rather than presenting a single, specific dream, the performance invites audiences to project their own memories, desires and imaginations onto the stage, becoming “conscious dreamers” themselves. As circus defies gravity and theatre breaks free from reality, we are invited to enter the mysterious and unknown landscape of the unconscious.
