Directed by British circus director Timothy Lenkiewicz, the show marks FOCASA’s first international co-production. Taking fear—something deeply familiar and impossible to escape for any circus performer—as its starting point, the production brings together circus, theatre and dance to explore the darker sides of ourselves that we rarely reveal to others, and how we learn to live with our own fears. The performers draw on their individual disciplines, including diabolo, hat juggling, Cyr wheel, cube manipulation, chair balancing and club juggling, alongside acrobatics, tumbling and partner balancing—circus practices built on trust and the willingness to take risks. Fear is not simply a theme of the work; it is physically present in the performers’ bodies. Confronted with the constant possibility of losing balance, falling or failing, they repeatedly push beyond their physical and psychological limits, transforming uncertainty, hesitation and the process of overcoming fear into real tension onstage. The production also draws inspiration from folk tales and legends from around the world. Figures from different cultures—each embodying the unknown and our deepest fears—come together onstage to create a strange world suspended between reality and fable. Through these ancient stories and the physical language of contemporary circus, the show asks us to look again at what frightens us: perhaps the monsters we need to confront have never been out there in the world, but have always been hiding within ourselves.
