FOCASA joins forces with the Taiwan Choral Association’s male choir, with Shakespeare’s Wild Sisters Group director Wang Chia-Ming crossing disciplines to direct a theatrical experiment where circus meets a cappella voices. Taking inspiration from the extensive notebooks and manuscripts left by Renaissance master Leonardo da Vinci, the production explores new possibilities between physical movement and the human voice. Throughout his life, Leonardo moved freely across painting, sculpture, anatomy, mechanical invention and architecture. His way of observing, dissecting and recombining the world becomes Wang Chia-Ming’s creative approach to this multidisciplinary genius. Fourteen circus and vocal performers embark on a kind of theatrical anatomy experiment, breaking down language, sound, movement and space before rearranging them into new forms. Between the seemingly different worlds of circus and choral singing, they discover shared rhythms, breath and physical connections. The work also draws on the performers’ own life experiences, using a series of questions to enter into a dialogue across time with Leonardo’s art, inventions and architectural ideas. Rather than retelling his life, the production follows his relentless curiosity to reconsider the relationships between body and voice, art and science, the individual and the world, ultimately creating a theatrical poem woven from circus, voice and performance.
