Internationally acclaimed choreographer Lin Hwai-min joins forces with FOCASA Circus, Taiwan’s internationally touring contemporary circus company, to reimagine the beloved picture books of celebrated artist Jimmy Liao in a fantastical adventure about growing up, setbacks, and courage. The production takes its inspiration from a line in Jimmy Liao’s When the Moon Forgot: “Dedicated to the children who bravely grow up.” At the heart of the story is Jimmy Boy, a child like any other who is growing up—full of dreams, yet sometimes lonely because he feels different. Faced with bullying, setbacks, and repeated failure, he finds companionship and encouragement in a clown. He falls, gets back up, and little by little discovers the courage to keep moving forward. Along the way, familiar characters from Jimmy Liao’s picture books step off the page and into the circus ring: the blind girl, the little drummer, toy soldiers, the man wandering with a fishbowl in his arms, and the man and woman from Turn Left, Turn Right, forever passing each other by. Together, they accompany Jimmy Boy on an adventure through the trials and wonders of growing up. Somersaults, juggling, unicycling, Cyr wheel, tightrope walking and more bring this world vividly to life. Again and again, the circus artists challenge their bodies and gravity itself, transforming “courage” from an idea into something tangible—effort, risk, sweat, and the willingness to try once more after a fall. Follow the clown and Jimmy Boy into a world of picture books, filled with wonder, laughter, cheers, and surprises. Through this imaginative circus journey, adults may rediscover the child they once were, trying so hard to grow up, while children find the courage to face the unknown and take their next step forward.
