A Cyr wheel spins open memories of youth. The arc of a bouncing body traces the path of adolescence. Objects tossed through the air become games played across the years. Turn the world upside down, and time begins to run backwards, carrying us all the way back to the playgrounds of childhood...
Set against the backdrop of Taiwan in the 1980s, during the final years of martial law, the work revisits everyday life in the military dependents’ villages, where ordinary days were filled with their own distinctive pleasures and rhythms. A travelling vendor cycles through the neighbourhood streets selling household goods, becoming a kind of time traveller who summons moments from the past. Around him, a group of young people who grew up in these communities are drawn back into the memories and stories of their youth.
Blending nostalgia with circus, the production transforms childhood games into a playful physical landscape. Hide-and-seek, hopscotch, Chinese jump rope, spinning tops, bouncing balls, seesaws, tree climbing and swings are reimagined through circus movement and acrobatics. In rediscovering the simple pleasures of childhood, the work also recalls a time when neighbourhoods were closely connected and relationships were woven deeply into everyday life.
