【New Release】Do Circus Vol. 17 Winter Issue: Pop Up! Big Top

Text by Do Circus · Photos by Huang Shao-Jou

The big top is one of circus’s most iconic symbols and its most recognisable spaces. From the touring circuses of the nineteenth century to today, it has served both as a mobile theatre and as a place where artists, audiences and cities come together. Taking the circus tent as its theme, Do Circus Vol. 17 revisits its history, culture and future, asking how contemporary circus is redefining this traditional space and what new forms of spectatorship and public encounter the big top can create beyond conventional theatres. Designer Ho Wan-Chun disguises the magazine as a familiar convenience-store product: a bag of microwave popcorn. The concept reflects the tent as a container in which imagination can continually expand. Ordinary kernels suddenly burst and transform through heat and time, much like a circus tent rising from an empty piece of land and becoming a performance space filled with audiences, artists and the life of a city. Popcorn is also part of our familiar memory of going to the circus, creating a playful connection between spectatorship and popular entertainment culture.
