What FOCASA pursues goes far beyond acrobatics and juggling. Its work brings together dance, theatre, visual expression, and emotion. “We’re not here to imitate traditional circus. What we want is a hybrid—something born from crossing disciplines and the creative sparks that emerge between them,” says Lin Chih-Wei. The company has worked with renowned choreographers who encourage its performers to express emotion through the body. “In the past, you went onstage, performed a trick, and walked off. Now, even while we’re tumbling through the air, we need to make the audience feel something.” This philosophy is also reflected in the diversity of FOCASA’s performers. Alongside artists trained in acrobatics are performers with backgrounds in street dance, theatre, and contemporary dance. Some pick up an object to juggle it; others use it to embody a character. “Everyday objects—chocolate sauce, oranges, even slices of toast—can all be transformed into a creative vocabulary. That is the hybrid appeal of contemporary circus: it allows us to break out of established frameworks and embrace far more possibilities.”
